Handling your household appliances sustainably saves you money and energy

Those who take good care of their household appliances save a lot of energy and water. But is washing the dishes, for example, more ecological than using a dishwasher? Discover our tips for a sustainable lifestyle here.

Those who handle the energy guzzlers (read: household appliances) in their homes smartly, sustainably and consciously can save a considerable amount of energy, and therefore money, every year. You can read exactly how to go about it here.

Sustainable use of refrigerators and freezers

Refrigerators and freezers account for 25% of your energy consumption. By thinking twice when buying a new one, maintaining it well and placing it strategically, you can save a lot of energy and money.

  • Choose the most energy efficient models (A+++) on the market.
  • Don't put your fridge and freezer next to a heat source, but in the coldest part of the house.
  • Set your fridge and freezer to the right temperature: - 5°C for the fridge, -18°C for the freezer.

Use your washing machine and dryer strategically

Today, everyone has a washing machine or goes to the laundry regularly. But an important question to ask here is: do you really need a tumble dryer?

  • Invest in an A+++ model for your washing machine, which is both water and energy efficient.
  • Do 'boil wash' at 60°C instead of 90°C.
  • Descale your washing machine regularly and clean the filter frequently.
  • If your dryer suddenly stops working, ask yourself if you really need one. The classic clothesline is still the most sustainable solution. If you really can't do without one, invest in an A+++ model.
  • Use environmentally friendly cleaning and washing products.

Say goodbye to the dishwasher myth

Many people assume that doing the dishes by hand is more energy efficient than using a dishwasher. Well, that depends on the situation. Does your dishwasher only run when it's fully loaded? Then that's the best choice. If you want to wash the same number of glasses, plates, etc. by hand, you will be more economical with a dishwasher in the end. But ... If you're a single person and can't fill your dishwasher before it starts to smell, and you run it half full. Then choose to wash your dishes by hand. Just make sure you don't let the tap run while you're doing it.

Cook with common sense

You might not have expected this part, but there are some sustainable tips for when you are cooking.

  • Stop pre-heating the oven.
  • Take frozen foods out of the freezer in the morning and let them thaw at room temperature all day.
  • Always use covers on your cooking pots.
  • Consider buying a pressure cooker.
  • Invest in an induction hob.
  • If you have an electric hob, switch it off a few minutes earlier, as they retain their heat for a while.
